Discussion in the prompt posts

So folks have been worried about the lack of fills in the meme.

Sometimes memes fizzle out, sometimes folks start to get busy at certain times, sometimes when there's no new canon or a show's on hiatus there's a lull. I know this can be frustrating but I want to remind everyone that prompt posts are only for prompts and fills. Not about how people aren't filling, the comm has been quiet, or complaining about the length/type/nature of prompts. All non-prompt/fill comments and threads already made will be frozen, any new ones will be deleted. There are multiple other places you can address the lack of fills or whatever else. This post is now one of them.

Here you can have (respectful) discussion about how to kick start the fills again, whether it be by promoting the comm more, linking it on other Korra/AtLA communities, Tumblr, discussion boards, and wherever else the cool kids are hanging out these days. Perhaps a little contest or something else to give incentives to fill. Also, if you can fill a prompt (I realize not all of us are writers or artists, which is more than fine) then, y'know, fill it. Ideally this comm is about sharing our appreciation (and even criticisms) of Korra/AtLA, not getting a bunch of comments about how good our fic is.

I realize that I've been a negligent mod. When I started the comm I had more time on my hands, right now I'm working and have quite a few personal, volunteering and school related commitments to tend to. I've said multiple times that if anyone is willing to help out or take over some mod duties I'd love the help. I'm not trying to be terse but please do realize that I have a life outside livejournal and can't notice everything, which is why I appreciate it when folks even just let me know about any issues that are occurring via the mod post or by PM'ing me.

Comments in this post aren't screened, anon posting is on.

ETA: I don't think anyone's following this post anymore but I'm turning off the comments because there have been a bunch of porny spam comments.

Ideas for getting more fills

(Anonymous)
I think what's wrong is that people aren't seeing the prompts they want to write for.

Tumblr and fafiction.net are still crawling with fics. But the meme isn't. Those other two forums for fafiction aren't prompted, meaning that the authors can write whatever the hell they want.

So, I think we should encourage prompters to try to fill their own prompts. I understand how it feels when you prompt a great idea, and then want to write it yourself, but don't, because that would seem foolish for some reason. We should try to break that mentality down.

Also, as a suggestion, we could more actively link the meme to tumblr and fanfiction.net and archive of our own, and other places. Spread prompts around the internet, and ecourage that other stories be posted here.

Would anyone be opposed to an 'unprompted fills' post? It would certainly attract more writers. It removes the pressure of living up to a prompt and its expectations, and just let's a potential writer do their thing, and receive feedback. I know that sounds like a copout, but it's worth a shot.

Another idea. Perhaps we could allow for 'community formed prompts' or something like that. I realize that that's pretty much discussion- but if a whole bunch of people come together to shape an idea, and then all help to write it, it would also increase activity.

But as for right now, the easiest way to increase activity without making changes is to just boost our presence in other places of fanfiction- especially tumblr.

Thoughts?

There are two places where the prompts are being independently cataloged already. Neither has seemed to have changed the amount of fills coming in.

What I meant by tumblr was that we need independent bloggers to advertise the meme themselves. If you're writing a fill for here, put it up on your tumblr too. If you're an active member, don't forget to tell your followers. If you see a prompt you like, make a post about it. Those kinds of things.

Great idea, I just mentioned the meme on my tumblr and if I see any specific prompts I like (that I'm not too embarrassed to de-anon for) I'll post them as well.

I rather like this idea. The prompt posts are getting pretty unwieldy and hard to look through. Something that was easier to skim might appeal more to people looking for ideas.

A better way of tracking fills would be good too, though. I know there's two already, but they don't seem to get updated much, and it's especially easy to lose track of fills that consist of multiple posts added over a long period of time.

In other communities they sometimes reach out to members and get them to want to submit more by doing different themes per month. It'd be a nice addition.

this sounds awesome!

We could set up a sort of challenge tumblr/blog/post.

Each week, or twice monthly, or what have you, the Challenge Blog cycles through one or multiple pages of the Kinkmeme. Anons or Nonanons respond claiming one or more fills from that small cross-section of the meme, and then have a week/some other agreed upon amount of time to fill and post to the meme. Fillers talking about the creative process, giving advice and discussing plot and characters and such would be encouraged. Kind of like a weird version of Nanowrimo or if anyone has heard of it, the 'Unfuck Your Habitat" tumblr blog, which challenges readers to tiny cleaning tasks that jumpstart them into organizing their living spaces even when the task seems crazy daunting.

I'm not sure which would be better for a blog like this, LJ, Tumblr since I'm not so good at blogging myself.

But I'd be happy to participate. Sometimes when I have a lot of ideas or choices I get stumped on which to start, what direction to go, but if someone asks me to write something for them or gives me more limited options I'm happy to oblige and don't suffer the same kind of block. If that makes any sense?
(Frozen) (Thread)

That's a great idea. I feel like Tumblr is a better place for it, because I'm not really sure how LJ works. Personally I don't think I could handle the responsibility of such a blog, especially because I'm not that familiar with the Korra fandom.

Maybe if there was a way to document prompts relative to characters? I think I might have mentioned this before elsewhere but legit not sure so sorry if I'm being repetitive! I know for me, I'll be looking for prompts with specific characters and tones, but it's actually very hard to find things sometimes. Then when I do find things sometimes they're oldish, and nobody sees the fill.

Also, I actually wasn't aware of the "record your fill" list or this discussion until recently. Would it be possible to announce new sections of the meme in the prompt section so everyone knows about it?
(Frozen) (Thread)

I like this idea! The Delicious list is supposed to do this but it hasn't been updated in nearly 2 months. Is there somewhere like Delicious we could use that's more open-ended so anyone can edit it (or does Delicious have a feature like that)?
(Frozen) (Parent) (Thread)

I'm pretty sure Google allows a spreadsheet to be used by multiple users, that could work.

there is http://ficbendingauxiliary . tumblr.com ? i'm not sure how up to date it is though
(Frozen) (Parent) (Thread)

Hi, I run ficbending auxiliary. Since I run it alone and I only queue fifteen prompts a day (so it doesn't flood the tags or people's dashes), it's not up to date on the current meme. I would like to get all the prompts up faster, but it's one of the limitations of tumblr that if you use a tag it will show up in the general fandom tags.

However, it is also a feature of tumblr that you can use the tags to search for a specific kink or character or pairing if everything is tagged correctly. I'm trying to use detailed tags, but it's hard to know what is effective as a tag for other people when I get very little to no input. I additionally think that feeding out the prompts slowly might help keep a steady stream of interest in the meme or at least bring people in to lj from tumblr.

On the other hand, I have the blog listed as NSFW, so anyone who has that checked off in their settings will not see any of the prompts when they check the tags. I have been waffling about whether or not to take it off of the NSFW listing. Thoughts?

I have prompts queued up through page 28 of the first half of the meme at the moment and I work on it a little bit every couple of days. Anyone with suggestions on how to improve or make it more useful to the fans or the meme I would love to hear from you.

(Frozen) (Parent) (Thread)

Can you tag individual posts as NSFW instead of the whole blog?

A useful thing, though it would be more work, might be a way to let author anons submit links to their fills through the tumblr as well. That could draw more people over here, increase feedback on fills and just activity overall.

I can't be the only one who thinks it sometimes seems like a ghost town in the prompts section, even when there are fills.
(Frozen) (Parent) (Thread)

I considered doing that. I'd have to go back through them individually and make a judgement call on some of them. A lot of the more NSFW ones already have a trigger warning tag.

I have a note in the sidebar on the blog frontpage that people can send me anonymous prompts and I'll put them up on ficbending for them. No one has taken me up on it yet. D:

There are fills coming in though - I've seen two or three on the old post in just this past week, which is cool I think, since a lot of times people just ignore the old prompts once the new post is up.

Doing a link round-up of new fills might at least make people aware that fills are being made. The only thing with that and tumblr is that post will get buried quickly, even though the main Korra tag isn't moving as fast as it used to. A lot of the Korra fanbase just went back to school, so that's going to contribute to the slowdown, too. (I should do some fills, I've got a couple that I'm itching to do XD)

Here's the most recent progress report for the auxiliary with a timetable for how long it's going to take me to get all of the prompts done at the rate I'm going now:

I’m almost halfway through the first post. If I keep going at this rate, the first half of the meme should be done by the end of October. If the second half of the meme stays slow (and I imagine it will, though I’m poking the fire to keep the embers of it alive) I can probably have it all transcribed by December.

I imagine there will be a fresh new meme for when the next season starts in April. I’ll have to think of something to keep this blog interesting after the New Year.

I was thinking about fills rather than just prompts, on tumblr. Say someone posts a fill here and wants to stay anonymous, they can submit a note to tumblr similar to what's in the fill post above: title/description of the prompt along with a link. Maybe a note to say if it's complete or ongoing, and relevant tags? IDK how anon submissions to tumblr work exactly.

But anyway, then the link to the fill would appear on tumblr and people who are interested could click through to read the whole thing. It would be up to the author anons to submit their own fill + link, so you wouldn't have a bunch of extra work searching for them yourself.
(Frozen) (Parent) (Thread)

Good idea, sorry I didn't parse what you were trying to say the first time around. ^^' I went in and changed the settings and opened up the submissions box for people to submit their links as individual posts (and oops anonymous messages was off), and I'll update the sidebar when I get the chance. I guess we'll see if anyone uses it. I might still do a link round up. (Does AtLA or LoK have a daily or weekly news link page, btw?)

If you use flat view on the meme, new fills are pretty easy to find, so that's not really an issue. Actually, I kind of wish there was a link on the front page so people could get to flat view from the main prompt posts:

Using ficbendingauxiliary (http://ficbendingauxiliary.tumblr.com/)'s idea, I thought I would archive filled prompts on a tumblr as well.

I just started tonight (~10PM CST) and I set up a queue for tomorrow at midnight. I will be working on archiving more prompts and setting up an organised tagged page.
